Dear Dr. Schiffer,
Well at long last I am writing you this little testimonial to aver to the
wonderful results I experienced from the lumbar discectomy you performed on
me in early 2005.
As you may recall, in the summer of 2004, after some very strenuous activity,
I had experienced a sudden onset of severe left low back pain with radiation
of the pain and parethesias in the left lower extremity. From being an
active individual I was reduced to using a walker. I was eventually diagnosed
as having a herniated disc which was confirmed as a left L4-5 bulge on an MRI
exam. I initially experienced some rather amazing improvement with medication
and physical therapy over the next couple of months or so. However, I
then suffered a relapse and over the following months, went through a series
of transcutaneous fluoroscopic epidural steroid injections with no relief whatsoever. By
the time I arranged a consultation with you in early 2005, I had been rather
severely incapacitated for at least six months. After a careful reevaluation
you performed an endoscopic L4-5 discectomy and within the week I was able
to fly home to Washington State for three months of home rest/recuperation.
This brings me to the tardiness of this note to which can be attributed to
my being so busy playing catch-up on the many things in my life deferred due
to my long period of incapacity prior to seeking treatment with you and the
recovery time necessary after the discectomy. As you indicated prior
to the surgery, it took a full three months for my recovery, but subsequent
to that I was back on my feet without the walker, essentially pain free and
resumed my normal activities though a little lacking in muscle strength and
endurance – not surprising in view of my prior ten months of incapacity. Now,
I seldom
think about my back, I am pain free, all lower extremity symptoms have resolved,
and I
am able to participate in all physical activities without discomfort just as
I did before the herniated discs occurred. I use no pain medications. I
would like to be able to tell you that I heed your caution on the amount of
weight I should lift, but I pretty much lift what I did before my disc problem,
observing good lifting techniques of course, and have not had any problems.
I am and will always be grateful to you for your thoroughness and surgical
skills which have enabled me to return to a full and active life. By
the way, I will be celebrating my 80th birthday anniversary in October.
With best wishes,
Richard T. Nicolls, M.D.
