Following an elevator accident in 1986 in which my back was injured, I had four surgeries: one to remove a disk, one to install hardware, one to remove the hardware and fuse my lower spine, and another to enhance the fusions. For approximately six years thereafter, I suffered continuous and often excruciating pain in my leg. Also, I previously had 3 fusions done at Stanford University which never gave me any long term relief.
In 1998, I consulted Stanton Schiffer, M.D. Dr. Schiffer was forthright with me. He was cautiously optimistic but could make no promises about his proposed surgery, and stating that even if that surgery were successful, weather could still affect my back and I would still not be able to sit for long periods of time. Dr. Schiffer was correct in both of those warnings; however, the terrible leg pain which was the target of Dr. Schiffer's surgery was completely eliminated and has not returned. I now walk daily.
